The Lancers traded sets all night with the Gauchos, but couldn't buck the trend in the final game, falling 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-11).
The loss drops the Lancers to 5-5 overall, 2-3 MPSF and improves UCSB to 5-7, 3-5.
After forcing the decisive game with a six-point win the Lancers grabbed an early lead in the fifth, but a 7-2 run late in the game gave UCSB an 11-8 lead and forced a CBU timeout.
Out of the break the Lancers got a kill from Aaron McCalmont, but couldn't string together back to back kills down the stretch, falling on a service error on the final point.
The Gauchos hit .615 on eight kills to take the final game. UCSB did not commit a single attacking error in the fifth set.
CBU's .412 hitting percentage in the final set was a match-high for the Lancers, but was not able to keep up with the pace of the home team.
The Lancers responded to each set loss with 15 and 14 kill games respectively, holding the Gauchos to .233 and .161 hitting percentages in the second and fourth game, their lowest of the match.
CBU jumped out to an early lead and led wire-to-wire in the second set and then did nearly the same in the fourth, trailing for just one point when UCSB took a 2-1 advantage early.
The momentum just never carried over to the following games as the Gauchos outpaced the Lancers in the other three sets.
Guilherme Koepp led CBU with 21 kills in the match and Brett Anderson recorded 63 assists.
The Lancers were out-blocked in the match 20-7. Dylan Davis posted 13 kills and seven blocking assists for UCSB.
CBU returns home for another MPSF matchup against No. 6 UCLA on Thursday. First serve is at 7 p.m.
