LONG BEACH, Calif. --- A night after winning in five set on the road No. 11 California Baptist University looked to repeat the feat, but came up just short against No. 4 Long Beach State.
CBU came back from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth and final game, but couldn't finish the job, falling 15-6 in the final game.
The Lancers lost 3-2 (25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 23-25, 15-16) to move to 12-12 overall, 8-10 MPSF.
CBU hit just .148 and .174 in the opening two games, looking down and out from the start on the road against the 49ers.
Smelling defeat the Lancers jumped out to an 11-6 lead early in the third game. LBSU would fight back, however, cutting the Lancer lead to two at 12-10.
CBU would hold off the LBSU run, finishing the match with a kill from Guilherme Koepp to make it 2-1.
The Lancers again jumped out to an early lead in the fourth game, but the 49ers evened the match at 12-12 on an ace by Taylor Crabb.
CBU would trail late, but Levi Cabral smacked a kill and then combined on a triple block with Aaron McCalmont and Amir Lugo- Rodriguez to even the set at 22-22.
The teams traded errors and then Cabral and Koepp ripped back to back kills to end it and force a fifth.
The final game would be all 49ers though as CBU couldn't find the magic it had against No. 9 Cal State Northridge just a night ago.
LBSU took a 4-1 lead early and then finished the match on a 6-0 run. The 49ers hit .556 in the final game and CBU hit -.067.
The Lancers were led by Cabral who posted 20 kills on the night and Michael Cate had 13 digs. Koepp had 14 kills and 12 digs in the match.
Crabb also had 20 kills in the match to lead the home team.
The 49ers out-blocked the Lancers 15.5-8.0 in the match.
LBSU moves to 17-6, 13-5 on the season.
CBU hosts No. 15 USC next Thursday.
