STOCKTON, Calif. --- Despite an incredible effort from Levi Cabral in his last match as a Lancer, No. 5 California Baptist University fell 3-2 to unranked Pacific on Saturday night.
Cabral led all players with an incredible 34 kills and added six digs, but it was not enough and the Lancers fell 25-21, 27-29, 25-18, 30-32, 13-15 in a tough battle against the Tigers.
It was senior night at the Alex G. Spanos Center, and it was the seniors on Pacific that took it to CBU, three of them having 10+ kills and one with 50+ assists.
The lancers seemed to be in control of the match early on, using an 8-4 run late in the first set to secure a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set two was a different story as Pacific came out early and took advantage of some costly CBU errors to jump to a 10-5 lead. It was back and forth for the rest of that set until Pacific pulled away and won 29-27 after another CBU error.
The third set was all about the Lancers, as they came out quick and jumped to a 12-7 lead powered by four Cabral kills. After an incredibly dramatic fourth set, the Tigers came out hungry in the fifth and secured the upset victory over CBU.
Cabral led all players in kills, but perhaps a telltale sign of how the night went for the Lancers, he also led all players with 11 attack errors.
CBU compiled 28 attack errors on the night and 18 service errors including a few costly ones in the two overtime sets.
After getting upset by the Tigers, the Lancers end their first season in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with a 16-14 overall record, going 12-12 in conference play.
The 12-12 mark should land them between sixth and eighth in the conference. They were picked to finish 10th in preseason polling.
The 34-kill performance was a great way for Cabral to end his career as a Lancer. Cabral finishes with 1,999 kills and 189 service aces, both program records.
Guilherme Koepp also had a remarkable season for CBU, becoming the first player in the history of the program to reach 400+ kills and 200+ digs. He ended with 464 kills and 210 digs in his first year with CBU.
Since CBU is still in transition, this years season comes to an end after this regular season matchup, next year the Lancers should be eligible for postseason play and the national championship.
