SEASIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University had a rough opening day, dropping a pair of matches at the Otter Invitational.
The Lancers fell in three games (25-15, 25-22, 26-24) to San Francisco State in the opener and then couldn't complete the comeback in the nightcap, falling to Cal State Monterey Bay 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 15-6).
After falling behind 2-1 in the late game, the Lancers used a 6-0 run early in the third to take a commanding 10-5 lead. The Otters pulled within two late, but CBU used a pair of two-point runs to stave off the tournament hosts and hold on for the equalizing victory.
It was the Otters who took the early lead in the fifth, however, going up 7-1 and never looking back. CSUMB hit .500 in the final set.
Kim McCalmont led the way with 18 kills and 19 digs in the match as one of three Lancers with double digit kill totals. Malika O'Brien posted 13 strikes and Jelena Dragovic had 10. O'Brien led CBU with a .333 hitting percentage and four blocks.
Julia Ashen had 27 kills for CSUMB and Jessica Malcolm had 18.
The Lancers dropped the opener in straight sets despite the first of two double-doubles from McCalmont.
After falling in the opening two games, CBU pushed the third into extra points, but fell after committing an error and giving up a kill on the final two plays. The Lancers led by as much as six midway through the set before the Gators battled back.
McCalmont posted 12 kills and 13 digs and O'Brien notched 11 kills and three blocks. Taylor Parker had 30 assists.
