RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After playing 33 home games in 2014, California Baptist University will take to the road more this upcoming year. Twenty-six of its contests will be played away from Totman Stadium in 2015, compared to 19 away games a year ago.
CBU will look to build on its impressive inaugural season as a fully-fledged NCAA member. The Lancers went 39-15, 20-12 in the PacWest for second place in the conference and qualified for the Division II postseason in their first year of eligibility.
Lancer fans can get an early glimpse of their team on Saturday, as CBU will be playing its first scrimmage of the year at UC Riverside, a NCAA Division I foe and cross-town rival, at 1 p.m. Albeit a scrimmage, it will mark the first time the Highlanders and Lancers have squared off in Gary Adcock's tenure as coach of CBU, with their last regular-season meeting coming in 1999.
The stakes will be raised this year, as CBU is aiming at taking another step after advancing to the West Regional semifinals in 2014. In preparation, the Lancers will face a challenging nonconference slate, playing three California Collegiate Athletic Association, one Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponents before beginning PacWest action.
While the Lancers will face Cal State Los Angeles on the first day of their season for the fourth year in a row, their opener will be played at the Golden Eagles' field on Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. On Feb. 6, CBU holds its home opener at Totman Stadium at 6 p.m. before wrapping up its three-game series with CSULA on the road Feb. 7.
Next, CBU faces another CCAA opponent – Cal State Dominguez Hills – in a three-game series (Feb. 12-14), with the Lancers opening and ending the series at home. A week later, the team will prepare for what is shaping up to be its biggest nonconference series of the year – a four-game road trip to Colorado Mesa. There figures to be plenty of playoff implications in the four-game series (Feb. 19-21). Colorado Mesa won the South Central Region tournament and advanced to the Division II National Championship in 2014, while CBU finished the regular season as the second seed in the West Region and made it to the tournament semifinals.
After visiting the Mavericks, a return to California brings a series with Cal Poly Pomona. The four-game set will start and end at the Broncos' field on Feb. 26 and 28, with the Lancers hosting them Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. Nonconference play concludes for CBU with a four-game homestand with Montana State Billings (March 4-7).
CBU will also open its PacWest season on the road, with a trip to Academy of Art (March 12-14), before it plays its next 12 games at Totman Stadium. Hawaii Pacific comes to town March 21st and 23rd, Fresno Pacific visits March 26-28 and Hawaii-Hilo drops in April 2-3.
From there, the Lancers will play three of their final four series on the road, starting with a trip to reigning conference champion Dixie State (April 9-11) before getting a chance to host rival Azusa Pacific (April 16-18). CBU closes out its regular season at Point Loma (April 23-25) and Holy Names (May 4-6).
