RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After a strong start to the season in nonconference action, California Baptist University carried momentum over into its PacWest opener Saturday night with a 69-57 win over Dixie State.
The Lancers, who are receiving votes in the USA Today/NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, improve to 7-1 on the season and begin conference at 1-0. Dixie State falls to 2-4 overall, 1-1 in the PacWest.
"We made plays tonight," said head coach Jarrod Olson. "Courtney [Nelson] did a nice job attacking the basket and really rebounded well. Olivia [Weber] had some nice moves around the basket, and Erin Asher was aggressively driving. We competed hard as a team to rebound and I am glad that we were able to start PacWest play with a win."
Just like she has for the last three games, Courtney Nelson led the Lancers with 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting. She picked up 12 rebounds as well to grab her first double-double of the season. Kamille Diaz followed with 15 points, going 6-for-12 from the field and stealing the ball four times. Olivia Weber rounded out the top-three scorers for CBU, ending the night with 10 points (4-for-9).
In a first-half battle, neither team could quite grab a firm grasp on the game, exchanging leads eight times and tying the score five times.
Down 22-18, Nelson scored four unanswered points on a layup and two free throws to even the game at 22-22. Putting full-court pressure on, the Lancers forced a Red Storm turnover as Cassidy Mihalko stole the ball away and laid it off the backboard to give CBU a two-point lead with just under five minutes before the break.
Looking to walk into halftime with CBU holding a three-point lead, Dixie State had other ideas as Kaylah Miller hit a three just before the buzzer to end the half, sending the teams tied at 30-30 into the locker rooms.
CBU opened the second frame on a 7-0 run. Mihalko initiated and ended the run, with Diaz finishing a shot from the perimeter in the middle.
The Red Storm kept things close until CBU went on an 13-2 run, capped by Nelson driving to the basket, to give the Lancers their largest lead of the night at 52-40.
As the Lancers started to pull away, DSU tried to keep the score within reach as the two teams headed down the stretch, cutting CBU's lead to single digits at 59-53.
Weber put the Lancers back in front by double-digits at 64-53, posting up under the basket. The Red Storm turned on a full-court press to try to catch CBU in transition, but the Lancers held on for the 69-57 victory.
With its first conference game under its belt, CBU takes a one-game break as the Lancers host Western Oregon next Saturday, Dec. 13, at 5:30 p.m.
