SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — If the first six minutes were any indication, California Baptist University had put Tuesday's result behind itself and was ready to attack. The Lancers opened with a 19-2 run and kept rolling, grabbing an 88-53 win over Dominican University of California Thursday night.
The Lancers improve to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in conference with the win, while the Penguins fall to 5-5 on the season, 2-2 in the PacWest.
"We really played well as a team tonight, good ball movement and effort on defense," said head coach Jarrod Olson. "Cassidy really stepped up her scoring and our bench had a big impact on the game."
Three hoopsters finished the night with scores in double figures, leading CBU to shoot an impressive 48.5-percent from the field and 47.8-percent from beyond the arc. Cassidy Mihalko went 8-for-10 and 3-for-5 from distance to pick up a game-high 19 points. Darsha Burnside followed with 17 points (6-for-13, 5-for-5 FT) and Courtney Nelson rounded out the trio with 13 points on a 6-for-11 performance.
While not scoring in double-digits like she some times has before, Kamille Diaz dished out a game-high seven assists—tying her career best—while only turning the ball over once. Erin Asher added three assists without a turnover. Megan Brown and Burnside each snagged eight rebounds each.
After taking a 7-0 lead, Dominican ended the spree with a basket of its own, but couldn't stop the bleeding. Diaz found Nelson in the paint on a fast break to initiate another run as CBU scored 10 unanswered points, capped by a jumper from Olivia Weber.
The Penguins tried to cut the Lancers' margin back into single digits, but couldn't quite seem to slow the visitors down as CBU held a 46-30 upper hand at halftime.
Keeping the offensive pressure turned on high, CBU built up a 30-point lead 10 minutes into the second frame. Up by 21 at 61-40, the Lancers put the game out of reach and almost doubled the Penguins' score with a 17-0 run. Every one was getting in on the action in the run, with Chanel Cambronero accounting for six points and Emily Schmidt knocking down two free throws.
With the game securely in their hands, the Lancers coasted to the 88-53 win. They get one day off before they conclude the three-game road trip on Saturday against Notre Dame de Namur. CBU and the Argonauts tip off at 1:00 p.m. to close out 2014.
