HONOLULU, Hawaii --- California Baptist University has had to face tough opponent after tough opponent, taking on eight ranked opponents in 14 matches. Wednesday night provided no relief as the Lancers dropped a 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-10) decision to the No. 11-ranked University of Hawaii.
The Lancers fall to 3-8 overall and 2-7 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. On the other side of the net, the Warriors improve to 8-5, 6-3 in conference.
Johannes Brink grabbed a team-high 14 kills, followed by Kristopher Johnson's 12 kills. Johnson finished the night with a .348 hitting percentage, while Jackson Burge registered a .400 attack clip off seven kills and one error.
After UH opened the first set with the first two points, the Lancers responded with four-straight kills from Johnson, Burge and Brink to take the lead at 4-2.
The Warriors battled back and stayed with CBU, initiating a tight race to 25 as the teams evened the score at 20-20--the ninth time the score was tied. Fueled by two kills from Brink and three Warrior errors, the Lancers grabbed the first frame 25-22.
Looking to keep the momentum rolling, CBU laid down the first two points of the second set off kills from Joel Blocksom and Brink and grabbed an early 5-1 lead.
The Lancers couldn't hold off the Warriors, however, as UH fought back into the game and took over control on a 4-0 run to put it in front 21-18. CBU tried to regain control, but surrendered the second set 25-22.
With momentum in their favor, the Warriors went on to take the next two sets 25-17 and 25-10 to claim the four-set match victory.
CBU gets a rematch with UH on Friday as the two teams face off again at 9:00 p.m. PST. The Lancers return back to the mainland, but will play another road match before returning home on Feb. 26, hosting USC at 7:00 p.m.
