LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- California Baptist University concluded its season on the road with a three-set defeat to No. 10-ranked UCLA Thursday night (25-20, 25-12, 25-23).
The Lancers end the rocky season 4-24, 2-22 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. On the other side of the net, the Bruins improve to 17-10, 14-9 in conference.
Johannes Brink led CBU with 13 kills on the night, while senior Kristopher Johnson was just on the cusp of double figures at nine kills on a .500 attack clip.
Both teams battled in the first set, exchanging points for the first half of the frame. UCLA went on a three-point run to take a 18-13 lead. Joel Blocksom laid down a kill and followed with an ace to put the Lancers within three, but the Bruins kept pushing to take the set 25-20.
UCLA carried momentum over into the second and quickly built up a 20-10 lead. A Brink kill and a service error gave the Lancers their last two points, but the Bruins took the set 25-12.
Trying to shake off the 2-0 match hole, CBU opened the third with a 4-0 run off an UCLA service error, followed by back-to-back Blocksom and Caleb Miller kills. Miller and Brett Anderson then teamed up for a block to deny a Bruin attempt, forcing UCLA to call a timeout.
The Bruins battled back and the score remained close for the remainder of the set. Even at 22-22 off a Miller kill, UCLA responded with a kill of its own to force a CBU timeout. Johnson followed with his final collegiate point to even the score at 23-23, but the Bruins scored two-straight points to seal the match with a 25-23 third set victory.
