MERCED, Calif. -- California Baptist University built up plenty of confidence heading into its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener by sweeping its second opponent in as many attempts Saturday, with a 25-13, 25-17, 25-17 victory Saturday.

In the process, the Lancers set a record for aces in a three-set match with 16 on the day. They had previously posted that many aces in matches against St. Ambrose and UC Santa Cruz back in 2009 and 2010, respectively. The Lancers improved to 2-1 on the year, while the Bobcats slip to 0-2.

Jonathan Tuttle had a team-high nine kills on 11 attempts and tied with Roy Powell for a match-best five service aces on the night. Rocky DeLyon and Rohit Paul each had seven kills on hitting percentages of .700 and .500, respectively, while Tuttle attacked at a .636 clip.

CBU will look to keep building on its momentum against Pepperdine, currently the top-ranked team in the nation, Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Van Dyne Gym.
