RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- In two road matches against top-11 ranked teams, California Baptist University will look to replicate the magic it had against UCLA two years ago on Tuesday, and carry it over against UC Santa Barbara on Friday.
CBU looks to continue what has been a back-and-forth series with #11 UCLA in a match that will be aired on the Pac-12 Network. The Lancers swept their two-match series with the Bruins in 2013, while UCLA took both 2014 contests. CBU's last victory over a ranked squad came in four sets against third-ranked UCLA on April 4, 2013 (21-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-20). The eighth-ranked Gauchos have been rolling of late, defeating #10 Long Beach State and the Bruins in their last two matches.
Since returning from BYU, the Lancers have had to shuffle their lineup due to injuries. In all, they have used five different starting lineups this season, with lots of players seeing court time. Ten players got in on the action for CBU last Friday against #6 Hawaii. Caleb Miller tallied seven blocks and two kills in the match, and Roy Powell added nine kills on a .300 percentage and two blocks for the Lancers.
SERIES NOTES (UCLA)
UCLA has won nine of its 12 matches with CBU, going 8-1 in its home court, as well. Outside of the Lancers' sweep of the Bruins in 2013, CBU's other victory in the series came in 2010 and broke UCLA's six-match winning streak that started the series back in 1999.
SERIES NOTES (UC SANTA BARBARA)
The Gauchos owns a 10-5 record against the Lancers, and has won two straight. CBU last defeated UCSB with a sweep on April 3, 2013, in the Van Dyne Gym. The longest winning streak in the series is two matches, which the Lancers will look to keep that way Friday.
RECORD RUNDOWN
Two Lancers are aiming at setting new single-season program records on the defensive side of the net. Enrique de Diego Garcia's current 1.26 blocks-a-set average ranks him fifth on CBU's single-season list. Arturo Kusio's 1.54 blocks a set from 2004 are currently No. 1. Garcia has also attacked at a .415 percent, which would put him at fifth on that list, as well, but he needs eight more attempts to qualify for the record. Kevin Kustura has put up 1.98 digs a set this year, which is the eighth best average in a season so far. Rafael Paal's 2.31 digs a set in 2000 present a tough mark to overcome.
UCLA AT A GLANCE
The Bruins have split their last four matches, with wins over Cal State Northridge and Stanford and losses to Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara. UCLA's offense runs through phenomenal freshman Jake Arnitz, who leads the team with 101 kills (3.26 a set on a .321 percentage) on the outside. Fellow freshman outside hitter J.T. Hatch is second on the team with 82 kills (.283 a set, .292 percentage). The Bruins average more than one assist a set (11.4) than their opponents and also have 93 blocks compared to 64 on the other side of the net. Mitch Stahl has a team-high 37 blocks, while three different players -- Eric Matheis, Steve O'Dell and Hagen Smith -- have seen time at setter.
UC SANTA BARBARA AT A GLANCE
Coming off a three-match road trip, the Gauchos have been on a roll and won three of their last four against UCLA, Long Beach State and Stanford. They were handed a setback at Cal State Northridge to bring their record to 8-5 this year. UCSB will look to build on its 6-2 record in the Rob Gym this season. Three different players have reached triple-digit kills this season, with Kevin Donohue (167, 3.98 a set), Weston Nielsen (130) and Jacob Delson (108). Jonah Seif has an even 500 assists, averaging 10.87 a year.
