LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- California Baptist University knew it was in for a challenge when it traveled to 11th-ranked UCLA for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Tuesday night. The Bruins picked up a 25-20, 25-17, 25-19 sweep victory in the Pauley Pavilion.
CBU falls to 3-12, 1-11 in conference this year, while UCLA is now 7-5, 3-5. The Lancers were led by dual threats of Cody Jackson and Roy Powell on offense and defense Tuesday, with each logging six kills and five digs. Powell also added four blocks, while Enrique de Diego Garcia contributed six blocks and three kills. Zachary Melcher had 19 assists, five digs and three blocks.
In the first set, CBU jumped out to a 4-1 lead on kills from Jackson, Garcia and Rohit Paul. UCLA countered with a 10-4 run that gave it a three-point lead, 11-8. The Bruins built it up to a five-point advantage, 14-9, before the Lancers answered with a 3-0 run on a kill from Paul and ace from Powell to pull within 14-12. UCLA had another response with a 6-2 run that gave it a 20-14 cushion en route to an opening-set victory.
CBU fell into an early 8-5 hole before a 5-0 run capped by a Jackson kill gave the Lancers a 10-8 lead. The visitors maintained that advantage at 13-11 before UCLA rattled off eight-straight points to grab a 19-13 edge and pushed on to a 20-17 win. With a two-set lead in place, the Bruins kept up the momentum and grabbed the three-set win.
The Lancers continue a short MPSF road trip at UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 7 p.m. before returning home for non-conference matches with Holy Names and UC Merced next week.
