RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Ever since Point Loma lit a fire under California Baptist University back on Jan. 17 with its only home defeat, the Lancers have been on a roll and taking down everyone in sight.
Saturday night was no different as CBU grabbed a 20-point victory over rival Azusa Pacific, 68-48, to extend its winning streak to six-straight and move to 19-3 on the year, 12-2 in the PacWest — sitting in a tie for first in the standings with Hawaii Pacific. The Cougars fall to 14-8 overall, 10-5 in conference with the loss.
Two players finished the night in double figures for CBU, with one more just on the cusp. Courtney Nelson posted 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting, adding eight rebounds and four assists on the night. Cassidy Mihalko followed with 16 points (6-for-11, 4-for-6 3FG), while Olivia Weber was just on the brink with nine points (3-for-4).
After Nelson scored the first points of the night, APU evened things up with a basket of its own, but that was the closest the Cougars would ever get to taking control of the game. The Lancers responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a Mihalko three, to get the game rolling.
The Cougars managed to cut the score to one point, but the Lancers took their first double-digit lead of the night as Weber forced a turnover and put Erin Asher on the attack to put CBU up 18-8 halfway through the first period. APU tried to hang on, but found itself trailing 28-21 at halftime.
Like she had in the first half, Nelson opened the second with the first two points, laying in a pass from Kamille Diaz. Still, APU tried to keep the Lancers at an arms reach, but CBU had other plans.
In front by eight, CBU started to push away and went on a scoring spree sparked by a shot from the perimeter by Mihalko. The Lancers scored 12 unanswered points to hold their first commanding cushion of the night. They got their largest lead, 54-30, with 10 minutes to go as Diaz sank a three off an assist from Nelson.
APU tried to battle back, but it was a little too late as the Lancers walked away with the 68-48 win.
CBU continues its time in the comforts of home, hosting three Hawaii schools next week, beginning with UH Hilo on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
