RIVERSIDE, Calif. — This time last year, California Baptist University was No. 21 in the 2013-14 Division II Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings and went on to finish 26th overall. This year, the Lancers have cracked the top-10 early and hope to keep that placement as the spring season sports slowly start to wind down.
CBU sits in the No. 8 spot — the highest of the PacWest and West Region schools — with 377.50 points. Women's basketball was a major contributor to the tally, bringing in 90 points on their NCAA Division II runner-up finish. Men's basketball added 63 points after finishing the year in ninth place, while men's and women's swim and dive combined for 130.5 points with two top-10 finishes at the championship meet — women took eighth and men took 10th. Wrestling rounded out the final team to contribute points for the winter season, adding 44 points.
"Our goal is to provide our student athletes with the special opportunity of competing for a national championship," said Director of Athletics Dr. Micah Parker. "The winter sports overall had great seasons with both swim teams finishing in the top 10, men's basketball finishing in the Sweet 16 and women's basketball making it all the way to the championship game. Our student-athletes have really risen to the occasion and can see that they have the potential to be nationally prominent."
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women's and seven men's. The first Division II spring standings will be released Thursday, May 21, but are still unofficial. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season. Complete standings and the scoring structure can be found on NACDA's website at www.directorscup.org.
