STANFORD, Calif. -- After taking Stanford to five sets back in the Van Dyne Gym in January, California Baptist University gave the nationally 14th-ranked Cardinal another scare on the road Thursday night.
After dropping the first set, the Lancers came back and won the second but could not sustain that momentum in a 25-12, 24-26, 25-20, 25-19 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation loss. CBU moved to 6-19, 2-17 in conference this season. Stanford improved to 10-13, 7-10. Jonathan Tuttle had a team-high 13 kills on 31 attempts, finishing with a .290 hitting percentage, along with six digs for the Lancers.
Enrique de Diego Garcia had six blocks and five kills for CBU, which received eight kills each from Roy Powell and Rocky DeLyon. Kevin Kustura logged 10 digs and DeLyon had eight of his own for the Lancers. Zachary Melcher finished with 36 assists and four blocks.
After winning the first set and taking a quick 5-1 lead, the Cardinal led for the majority of the second set and held a 19-16 advantage late. A 6-1 CBU run fueled by a Cody Jackson ace and Tuttle kill gave the Lancers a 22-20 edge. Stanford fought back and grabbed set point at 24-23, before Tuttle tied things with a kill. Consecutive Cardinal errors gave CBU the 26-24 victory to tie the match at a set apiece.
CBU closes out its road trip with a visit to Pepperdine for a 7 p.m. match Saturday. The Lancers host their Senior Day at 7 p.m. on April 16th with USC.
