RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In its home opener against the top-ranked team in the nation, California Baptist University shocked the No. 1 UCLA Bruins in the first two sets of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation showdown Wednesday.
In the first set, the Lancers dominated when it came to hitting percentage and overall defense, but just dropped the overtime game. CBU would give UCLA all it could handle again in the second, but just missed out another win before falling to the Bruins in three sets, 27-25, 25-21, 25-12, in the Van Dyne Gym. UCLA remains undefeated at 6-0, 3-0 in the MPSF while the Lancers slide to 3-3, 0-3.
Rohit Paul had a sensational night for CBU, with a match-high 10 kills on a .421 percentage (10-2-19), along with four digs and a block. Rocky DeLyon led the Lancers in digs, with six, while also notching eight kills and two blocks.
Zachary Melcher earned his first start of the year at setter for CBU and finished with 25 assists, four digs, a block and a kill. Overall, he orchestrated the offense to the tune of an impressive .279 hitting percentage (28-9-68).
There is one day for the Lancers to regroup before they play host to another highly-ranked MPSF foe – No. 9 UC Santa Barbara Friday at 7 p.m.
Despite Wednesday's loss, CBU had to be comforted by the way it hung with the No. 1 team in the NCAA. The Lancers did so by coming out hot in the first set. They out hit the Bruins .400 (11-1-25) to .139 (14-9-36) in the opener. DeLyon and Paul respectively had four kills and three digs and three kills and two digs in the set.
UCLA would take an early three-point lead and stretch it to four, 16-12, before the Lancers put up their first extended run with three-straight points on a kill from Caleb Miller and Roy Powell.
Runs were exchanged, with the Bruins going up 19-15 with the next three points, before CBU answered again on a DeLyon spike and consecutive UCLA errors. With the Bruins clinging to a 19-18 lead, they looked to pull away but never would by much.
Another DeLyon kill and combo block from Powell and Miller would knot the score at 23 points apiece. CBU dodged the first two set points it faced, but never quite grasped one itself in the 27-25 loss.
The Lancers would out hit UCLA again in the second set, thanks to four more kills from Paul and three from DeLyon. CBU raced out to a 9-4 lead in the set after two kills and blocks assists from DeLyon in the early going.
The Bruins would answer back and take a 17-15 lead near the halfway point. Two kills from Paul sustained a 4-2 CBU run that tied the score at 20-20. UCLA got an edge by scoring the next three points and would close out the frame on a 5-1 charge.
Paul would add three more kills in the third set, but it was not enough to hold back the Bruins.
