SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – In its second top-eight matchup in a row, No. 15 California Baptist University put together a strong offensive showing, hitting .304 (30 kills and nine errors on 69 attempts) at eighth-ranked UC Santa Barbara Friday night.
The Gauchos grabbed the three-set win (25-20, 25-16, 25-20) over CBU, however, by hitting .461 (45-10-76) and posting a 27-16 advantage in digs. The Lancers drop to 8-11, 3-11 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while UCSB improves to 13-6, 9-5.
Rocky DeLyon posted nine kills and three digs for the Lancers, who had six digs from Emmett Enriques. Rohit Paul amassed five kills, two aces and two digs for CBU, while Enrique de Diego Garcia had seven kills and a block.
In set one, UC Santa Barbara got out to a 20-15 lead before a service error led into Paul's consecutive aces to cut it to a two-point deficit. A Garcia kill kept it there, 21-19, but the Gauchos got out of the jam with a 4-1 run.
A 3-1 charge coming on two DeLyon kills forced a 15-15 tie in set three, but UCSB rattled off five of the next six to take a strong lead late, 20-16, and never look back.
CBU has a home-and-away series with USC next week. The Lancers host the Trojans in the Van Dyne Gym Thursday at 7 p.m. and then travel to the Galen Center Saturday at 7 p.m.
