LA JOLLA, Calif. – It is always imperative to avoid a fifth set, especially when on the road. California Baptist University was determined to end Friday night's match at UC San Diego in four sets and did just that for a 25-21, 21-25, 25-15, 25-23 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory.
For the first time since 2013, CBU has put together consecutive wins in the ultra-competitive MPSF after defeating 11th-ranked UC Irvine on its home floor Wednesday. The Lancers now improve to a game within .500 this season at 5-6 and 2-6 in the conference. The Tritons fall to 3-8, 0-7.
"We were confident down the stretch," Coach Derek Schmitt said. "We play each set in five-point increments. We kept it small and expected a fight from them. It was important to follow up our win from Wednesday. We didn't want to waste our win at UC Irvine with a loss tonight."
Efficiency on the offensive end was crucial, as CBU hit .419 as a team, with 60 kills and 11 error on 117 attacks. Arturo Iglesias orchestrated the offense to the tune of 53 assists, while also posting nine digs, four kills and three blocks. The redshirt freshman setter had five players post at least six kills.
"I was really happy with our sideout offense and how we executed," Schmitt said. "It took us awhile to get our block going, but we started putting some together in the third and fourth sets."
Enrique de Diego Garcia had another fantastic night, posting at least 15 kills without an error for the second match in a row. The sophomore middle blocker finished with a .571 hitting percentage with 16 kills on 28 swings.
With the match on the line, the Lancers went back to Garcia for the winner. CBU led 21-18 in set four, but UCSD refused to go away quietly and battled back to a 22-22 tie. A service error and stuff at the net from Iglesias and Garcia put CBU back in control, up 24-22.
The Tritons threatened to force overtime, now down just 24-23. Not wanting to delay things any further, Iglesias went back to the big man in the middle and Garcia powered down a kill to avoid extra points in the fourth set, with a potential fifth looming.
"We sided out at 76 percent all night, and right before that point I told the guys we just needed one more," Schmitt said. "We had Enrique in the front row and they probably figured that was where [the ball] was going to go, he's been our guy the last two matches, but he still delivered.
"We knew it would be tough, but the guys just kept their composure," Schmitt said. "We sided out so well, we were confident we could keep it going."
Garcia's offensive night was rivaled only by CBU opposite hitter Roy Powell, who had a match-high 17 kills on a .448 clip (17-4-29). Powell even put together the ever-so-rare double-double with 10 digs, as well.
"Roy and Arturo have had great chemistry together, and we wanted to keep [Roy] in there," Schmitt said. "He always serves tough, and just plays well in that gym."
Jackson Burge may not have cracked double digits, but was super efficient with nine kills on 13 swings making up a .615 mark (9-1-13). He also logged four blocks, two digs and an ace. Rohit Paul also amassed six kills and no errors on 14 swings for a .429, and also notched three service aces for the Lancers.
A late 5-1 run fueled the Lancers to a set one-win, turning a 15-14 deficit into a 19-16 lead. Kills from Burge, Powell and Garcia and an ace from Rocky DeLyon — who finished with eight kills, eight digs, three blocks and two aces — were key to the charge.
CBU's next three points came on kills, with two credited to Garcia and one to DeLyon, making it 22-19 in favor of the Lancers. After a service error, a combo block from DeLyon and Burge and another DeLyon ace ended the set.
Both offenses erupted in the second, with CBU hitting .444 (16-4-27) but UCSD countered with a .538 (15-1-26) for the 25-21 win. The Lancers responded by hitting .556 in the third (16-1-27) to log a 25-15 victory.
The third set saw CBU race out to an early lead, but UC San Diego managed to stay within two points, 9-7. A 6-2 run sparked by two Powell kills helped the Lancers take a stronghold on the set, up 19-13. CBU closed the set out on a 6-1 charge sparked by a kill and two aces from Paul.
Tomorrow, CBU hosts two matches, first taking on Holy Names at 1:00 p.m. The Lancers close the night against Concordia (Calif.) at 7:00 p.m.
