OAKLAND, Calif. – Fifteen aces completed a perfect non-conference season for California Baptist University with a road sweep at Holy Names Saturday afternoon, 25-12, 25-19, 25-22.
Three big advantages in aces (15-2), digs (43-26) and hitting percentages (.319 to .143) paved the way to victory for the 15th-ranked Lancers. Those 15 aces were one off the single match high in CBU history and just the sixth time the Lancers have put up that many aces in a match. CBU is now 12-14 this season after going 8-0 in non-conference matches. Holy Names falls to 1-18 this year.
Jackson Burge had an impressive performance for CBU, with eight kills, five aces and six digs. Emmett Enriques posted double-digit digs (10) for the second match in a row, while Rohit Paul finished with a match-high 10 kills and added two aces, two blocks and two digs.
Zachary Melcher logged 30 assists, six digs and three kills. CBU had three other players put up at least six kills – Kevin Vaz (eight kills on nine swings, an ace, two blocks, three digs); Caleb Miller (six kills, three blocks, two digs) and Cody Jackson (six kills, two aces, three digs).
A 5-0 run, fueled by two Paul kills and a block, put CBU in the driver's seat right away, with a 14-5 lead. Holy Names pulled within six, 16-10, before a 9-2 charge highlighted by four aces from the Lancers gave them a 22-11 cushion. Powell had two aces, Luis Palos and Burge each added another, with three Burge kills in the run, as well.
CBU scored the first four points of the second set thanks to two aces and a kill from Jackson, before the Hawks fought back within a point, 4-3. The Lancers took control of the set, with an 11-4 lead after a 7-1 run on two kills and a block from Melcher. HNU would fight back within four points, but that was it in a 25-19 CBU win.
Holy Names would hold a rare lead early in the third set before it managed to force a tie at 21-21. An error and Palos ace gave the Lancers a two-point lead, 23-21, and they closed out the match on a Vaz kill and Burge ace.
With four Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches to go, the Lancers play their final two home matches Wednesday and Friday against No. 11 UC Irvine and UC San Diego, respectively, with both starting at 7 p.m.
