RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A lot of accolades have been earned by California Baptist University's Enrique de Diego Garcia in his two-year career. The sophomore added an All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honor to the list on Thursday.
Garcia is the fourth Lancer to earned MPSF All-Conference honors and the first since 2013, outside of all-freshman team selection. The middle blocker also notched MPSF and AVCA Player of the Week honors this season, as well, after being voted the Off the Block National Freshman of the Week in 2015.
At the end of regular-season play, Garcia ranks second in the NCAA and MPSF in hitting percentage, with a .481 after putting down 209 kills and just 27 errors on 378 attempts. The native of Madrid, Spain also finished eighth in the conference in blocks per set (1.04) and 17th in the NCAA. Overall, he posted 105 blocks (98 assists, seven solo), 10 aces and 24 digs. He had 12 matches with at least eight kills, five with 13 or more and two with 16. He put together nine matches with a minimum of five blocks.
It is quite the feat for the Lancers to produce an All-MPSF player in a conference filled with the top-ranked teams in the NCAA, including UCLA, BYU, Stanford, Pepperdine and Long Beach State. Garcia becomes the fourth player to earn all-conference honors.
Three CBU players: Levi Cabral, Aaron McCalmont and Guilherme Koepp were all-conference players in the MPSF in the program's first season as a member in 2013. Zachary Melcher became the Lancers' first all-freshman player in the MPSF last season, as well.
Garcia helped guide CBU to a 14-16, 4-16 in the MPSF record this season. It was the Lancers' best season in the MPSF since 2013 when they went 16-14, 12-12. This year, the team was undefeated (8-0) against non-conference foes and 11-1 against unranked competition.
