Not Without A Fight

HONOLULU — It was do-or-die Saturday night for No. 14-ranked California Baptist University. If the Lancers beat ninth-ranked Hawaii, they would extend their season for the first time since transitioning to the NCAA. If they lost, the season was over.
CBU put up a fight, but couldn't quite overcome the Warriors, dropping the match in three (26-24, 25-21, 25-20).
The Lancers finish the season with a 14-16 overall record, 6-16 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Hawaii improves to 16-11 on the year and 11-11 in conference, heading into the MPSF tournament as the seventh seed.
Kevin Vaz (6-1-9) and Enrique de Diego Garcia (9-0-14) led the Lancers on .556 and .643 respective hitting clips. Arturo Iglesias finished the night with 29 assists, five digs and five blocks.
CBU opened strong, scoring the first two points of the night on a kill from Roy Powell and an ace from Cody Jackson. The Lancers didn't let up and turned that into a 6-2 lead on three-straight attack errors from Hawaii.
The Warriors tried to put together a run to get back within reach, bringing the score within one, 15-14, but Powell slammed home a response. He then teamed up with Vaz and Jackson for a combo block to force Hawaii to call its first timeout of the set, 17-14.
After Hawaii evened the set at 18-18, Garcia tipped an off-speed kill down to keep his team in front. Powell followed with a kill from the left side to force the home team's second timeout of the set, trailing 20-18 to CBU.
Calls didn't go in the Lancers' favor as Hawaii tied the set up at 24-24, before taking the set 26-24.
CBU needed to put momentum back in its favor in game two, but soon found itself trailing 8-4.
The Lancers kept competing and cut the score to two, 15-13, on a Vaz kill before a Rocky DeLyon ace made it a one-point game. Hawaii got a point back, but Vaz got up high to power down a kill in the middle and a Warrior error evened everything up at 16-16. It gave CBU some much-needed juice as it kept the run going to take the go-ahead point on a Jackson Burge point.
Hawaii responded with four-straight points, however, to jump back in front 20-17.
Rohit Paul snapped the run with a shot across the court that the Warrior libero couldn't dig. Paul snuck in a kill past Hawaii's block to put CBU within one, 21-20, but it was the closest the Lancers would get as Hawaii took the set 25-21.
It put pressure on CBU to win set three to keep the match going.
The Lancers opened the set with a 2-0 run on a kill from Garcia and a duo block from Iglesias and Garcia, but Hawaii responded with three-straight points to take over the lead, 3-2. Garcia scored back-to-back kills to give CBU back the edge, 4-3, starting a battle for control of the set.
Hawaii was the first to grab a multi-point lead, 10-7, but Burge and Iglesias put the Lancers back within reach, 11-10.
Despite going down 22-13, CBU never gave up. Vaz ended the Warriors run with a kill and Burge added another to cut the margin to 23-16. Hawaii got match point in the next play, but DeLyon and Garcia kept the Lancers alive, 24-18.
It gave CBU some gusto as three Lancers (DeLyon, Iglesias, Garcia) teamed up for a block and Burge laid down an ace to put his team within four, 24-20, and force a Hawaii timeout.
The Warriors got the match-ending point coming out of the break, however, to take the third set 25-20.
