RIVERSIDE, Calif. – For the third time in as many years, California Baptist University qualified for the NCAA postseason tournament, but for the first time for any athletic program in school history, the Lancers will host the NCAA Division II West Regional.
Six teams will compete in the double-elimination tournament, hosted at Totman Stadium on the campus of CBU from Thursday to Monday. The last team standing in West Regional will advance to the NCAA Division II Championships, which will be played out May 28th to June 4th in Cary, N.C.
This year's West Regional will be made up of four California Collegiate Athletic Association teams and two PacWest schools, with CBU and Dixie State grabbing the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively, during Sunday night's selection show.
Cal Poly Pomona, the reigning West Region champ and the CCAA's regular-season champion, grabbed the third seed. Fresh off winning the CCAA Tournament title, Chico State -- the 2014 West Region winner -- earned the No. 4 seed, while Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay enter as the respective fifth and sixth teams.
First-round action begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday and continues through Monday. CBU opens the tournament against No. 6 Cal State East Bay on Thursday.
Overall, this is the 12th time in Coach Gary Adcock's 13 seasons the Lancers have qualified for the postseason. The Lancers own a 42-37 all-time postseason record (3-4 in NCAA) and reached the championship rounds five times (all in a row from 2010 to 2013).
This is the seventh time CBU has hosted a playoff competition, including NAIA and NCCAA, with the Lancers winning out four of those times in 2013, 2010, 2007 and 1997. CBU also hosted postseason games in 2011, 2006 and 1996.
