RIVERSIDE, Calif. – There were plenty of dramatics in store for California Baptist University on Senior Day, as it hosted Concordia and Fresno Pacific Saturday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
In their last home event of the season, the 13th-ranked Lancers overpowered the Eagles for a 265-33 victory but dropped a close call to the Sunbirds, 152-148. CBU is now 3-4 in dual meets this season, while FPU improved to 4-1 and Concordia sits at 0-2.
Christie Halverson, Alena Ruminantceva and Breanne Schlenger were the big winners for CBU on Saturday, with each winning two individual events.
Halverson won the 500-yard freestyle in four minutes, 59.36 seconds, touched first in the 1000 free in 10:31.35 and also took third in the 100 free (53.62). Rumiantceva won both the 100 (1:04.48) and 200 breaststrokes (2:19.53), while Schlenger dove her way to two victories on the 1-meter (255.97) and 3-meter boards (235.95).
CBU dominated both boards, placing first through fourth on both. Lauren Skinner placed second on the 1 (222.82) and 3-meter boards (163.35). Janae Jizmejian finished third at 1-meter (163.35) and fourth on 3-meter (177), while Savannah Uhlir was third on the three (203.17) and fourth on one (162.52).
Kylie Mihld placed first, second and third at one point for the Lancers. The senior celebrated her day by winning the 200 backstroke (2:07.54), taking second in the 100 back (1:00.00) and then third in the 400 individual medley (4:38.10).
Depth was on full display for the Lancers, as true freshman Mackenzie Mergel took second in the 200 free (1:54.12) and third in the 500 free (5:11.14). Meanwhile, Alex Wolf was a picture of consistency, taking third in three events: the 200 free (1:55.68), 100 breast (1:07.54) and 200 breast (2:25.75).
In the butterfly events, Kristina Tchernyshev took second in the 100 fly (58.13) and Courtney Chacon was second in the 200 (2:09.37). Sara Yoshii also finished fourth in both the 100 (1:01.66) and 200 flies (2:13.66).
One more dual remains on the Lancers' schedule, as they will travel to sixth-ranked UC San Diego next Saturday for a noon start.
