LA JOLLA, Calif. – Just like they were in the first event of the season, distance freestyle and diving remained a strength for California Baptist University in Saturday's regular-season finale.
Christie Halverson and Breanne Schlenger both won two events for the 13th-ranked Lancers in a top-20 NCAA Division II matchup on the road at No. 6 UC San Diego. The Tritons prevailed 200-100, as CBU dropped to 3-5 in duals on the year heading into the postseason with the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships up next on Feb. 8th at Colorado Mesa.
Halverson won both distance freestyle events, clocking in at 17 minutes, 27.28 seconds in the 1650-yard free and 5:00.87 in the 500 free. Schlenger won both boards with 286.80 points on the 3-meter and 245.92 points at the 1-meter board.
"I couldn't be more proud of how the team finished the regular season," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "Bre continued to carry the team, taking gold on both boards."
Kristina Tchernyshev provided CBU's other win in the 100 butterfly, with a time of 57.99. Courtney Chacon added two runner-up finishes in the 200 fly (2:09.02) and 400 individual medley (4:38.28) for the Lancers, who also had Kylie Mihld take third in the 400 IM (4:41.05) and 200 back (2:09.11).
Alena Rumiantceva notched two top-three swims for the Lancers, taking second in the 200 breast (2:20.11) and third in the 100 breast (1:04.72).
Mackenzie Mergel and Alex Wolf went three-four in the 200 free for the Lancers in 1:55.23 and 1:58.45, respectively.
Despite not getting the win, CBU showcased great depth in the 100 free. Ariahn Givens placed third in 54.41, while Halverson finished fourth (54.55) and Hannah Evans took fifth (54.89). Evans also placed third in the 50 free (24.60).
