SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – There's never an easy night in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. California Baptist University found itself taking on its fourth-straight ranked opponent on the road at No. 12 UC Santa Barbara Friday night.
The Gauchos were dangerous at the service line and on defense to pull out a 25-12, 25-22, 25-16 win. CBU is now 2-5, 1-3 in the MPSF and UCSB improves to 6-1, 3-1. The Lancers continue on the road next week, visiting Pepperdine and Stanford Wednesday and Friday, respectively, for a pair of 7 p.m. matches.
Enrique de Diego Garcia (five blocks, three kills) and Luis Palos (eight kills) both tallied eight points in the match for CBU. Cody Jackson added 20 assists, three digs and a block, while Logan Czyzewski compiled seven kills on a .462 percentage (7-1-13) and four digs in the match.
CBU rebounded from a tough first set with a 4-0 run to start the second, with a solo block from Garcia sparking the charge. UCSB was forced to call timeout, but the Lancers would not give up the lead until near the halfway mark when the Gauchos went up 15-14.
UC Santa Barbara rode the momentum out to a 23-18 advantage, but the Lancers would not go away easily. CBU utilized a 4-1 run, fueled on a kill and block from Garcia, to cut the deficit to 24-22 to force the home team to use its final timeout of the set.
The Gauchos notched the next point and then kept clicking in the third set en route to the sweep.
