CBU Wins, Dunkerson Advances

CLAREMONT, Calif. – For the first time this season, California Baptist University took part in dual competition at Pomona-Pitzer on Friday afternoon, qualified one of its divers and and nearly put up some more consideration times.

The 14th-ranked Lancers downed the Sagehens 209-91 and nearly saw Christie Halverson put up NCAA Division II B-cuts in the 500 and 1000-yard freestyles, while Emily Dunkerson stamped her ticket to the national championships in her second event of the season.

Dunkerson won both the 1 and 3-meter boards with 241.05 and 259.28 points, respectively. Millie Moro and Savannah Uhlir took second and third on both dive events, as well, as Moro posted a 229.35 on the three and 232.05 at 1-meter. Uhlir logged 192.08 on 3-meter and 223.43 at 1-meter. Janae Jizmejian also placed fourth on the 1-meter board (201.30).

"The Lancer divers had an amazing showing," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "Emily was this standout, qualifying for her first Division II Championship. The other divers did extremely well rounding out places one through four."

Halverson won both the 500 and 1000 frees with times of 5:07.10 and 10:29.48, which were just off the consideration times of 5:06.05 and 10:27.56. Mackenzie Mergel and Morgan Giordano both finished second and third in both events, as well, with Mergel posting a 5:09.40 and 10:31.97 and Giordano touching in 5:21.21 and 10:55.28.

Those were just a few events CBU dominated on Friday. The Lancers swept first through fourth in three events: the 200 individual medley, 100 and 200 breaststrokes, with CBU even going one to five in the 200 IM.

Emily Longfellow won the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.99, while Melody Coleman (2:14.56), Alex Wolf (2:17.10), Andrea Laliena (2:18.92) and Giordano (2:19.10) followed in right behind her.

Wolf won both the 100 (1:08.31) and 200 breasts (2:27.58). Robin Smallwood finished second in the 100 breast (1:08.73), while Taylor Dowden (1:12.20) and Amanda Loya (1:12.52) came in third and fourth. The order was slightly shuffled in the 200 breast, with Coleman in second (2:31.03), Dowden third (2:32.80) and Smallwood fourth (2:35.52).

Netali Bar led a medal sweep in the 200 back (2:09.02) for CBU, with Halverson (2:10.95) and Laliena (2:11.18) going second and third. Longfellow would also win the 200 free (1:57.87) and take second in the 100 fly (1:00.04) for CBU.

The Lancers also won the 400-medley relay in 4:01.27, thanks to Laliena, Coleman, Longfellow and Jenna Washburn (4:01.27). Grace Oeser, Smallwood, Mergel and Halverson also won the 400-free relay in 3:37.83.
