SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Another strong night from the service line led California Baptist University to its 13th sweep of the season at Dominican on Friday night.
Eight aces powered the fifth-ranked Lancers to the 25-20, 25-20, 25-15 sweep, as they improved to 15-0 and 7-0 in the PacWest to maintain its first-place standing in the conference. The Penguins drop to 4-10, 3-3, while CBU has one more match left in its road trip at Holy Names Saturday at 3 p.m.
CBU continued to dominate just about every statistical category on Friday, hitting .282 as a team, with 49 kills and 18 errors on 110 attempts, while holding Dominican to .168 (28-12-95). The Lancers also logged eight aces to the Penguins' one and enjoyed advantages of 45-34 in digs and 5-2 in blocks.
Madison Witt, Lauren Hackett and Sydney Kralj all posted double-doubles in the match. Madison did so with 10 kills, which came on a .364 percentage (10-2-22) and 10 digs and two aces. Hackett put down 13 kills and 10 digs, while Kralj logged 34 assists, 11 digs, two blocks and two kills.
Meanwhile, McKenna Witt hit .550 with 12 kills on 20 attacks and added six digs, two aces and three assists. Nicci Hinderaker led the onslaught of aces, with three, along eight digs and six assists at libero.
As set scores indicated, Dominican managed to give CBU one of its closest matches in PacWest play so far. Set one was tightly contested before until a 5-2 run gave the Lancers what was a big 21-17 lead.
Consecutive kills from Hackett and Yagoda Jedrzejczak (six kills, three blocks) sparked the rally, which was finished off by two more spikes from Madison and Elizabeth Gilley. Three-straight kills from Sydney Marks (five kills) gave CBU set point, 24-18, and it came on a Hackett kill.
The Lancers broke a 10-10 tie with an 8-3 run in set two, with Hackett notching three kills and McKenna adding an ace and kill in that span. Dominican managed to cut its deficit all the way down to one, 18-17, but committed consecutive errors out of a CBU timeout to hand momentum back to the visitors.
Dominican fought back within two, 21-19, but Madison put a kill and block together and then aced the winning point to help CBU finish things on a 4-1 run, 25-20.
Dramatics were done away with in set three. First, CBU opened things up on a 12-5 run thanks in part to three aces and three McKenna kills. The Penguins managed to fight back within 13-11, but the Lancers scored eight of the next nine to all but ensure the result. Madison started the run with two kills, while McKenna added three before it was done.
