CBU Goes Deep In HNU Sweep

OAKLAND – For the second time this week, California Baptist University got just about everyone into the action in a sweep at Holy Names on Saturday afternoon.
The fifth-ranked Lancers defeated the Hawks on scores of 25-14, 25-11, 25-9 to improve to 16-0, 8-0 in the PacWest, while HNU drops to 0-16, 0-7. CBU plays two matches at home next week, welcoming Chaminade and Azusa Pacific on Wednesday and Saturday for 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. match times, respectively, in the Van Dyne Gym.
CBU tallied at least eight aces for the third match in a row, with a season-high 10 twice in a row now. Paired with a 57-34 advantage in digs and 4-1 edge in blocks, the Lancers held Holy Names to a .023 hitting percentage, with 15 kills and 13 errors on 86 attempts, while hitting .360 (42-10-89) themselves.
Thirteen players got into the match for CBU, with six logging at least three kills. McKenna Witt enjoyed a big performance with 12 kills on a .550 percentage (12-1-20), 12 digs and two aces. Natalie Zimmerer appeared in all three sets and logged 21 assists, six digs and an ace. Lauren Hackett also amassed eight kills on a .429 percentage (8-2-14) and six digs.
Three Lancers enjoyed career matches. Tesa Oaks posted a personal-best five kills on a .556 percentage (5-0-9) and five digs. Elizabeth Gilley also posted a career-high 10 digs in the match, along with two aces. Halle Webster also posted an individual-high three kills on seven swings and three blocks. Nicci Hinderaker also logged six assists, six digs and an ace in two sets.
CBU started the match on a 10-1 run on two kills from Hackett and a kill and block from Madison Witt. The Hawks made a small run, but the Lancers responded on a 5-1 run, sparked by two Sydney Kralj aces. CBU ended the match on another run (3-1), coming on kills from Hackett, Sydney Marks and Soleil Smith.
Despite being tied 4-4, set two ended even more in the Lancers' favor. They scored the next six points on kills from Hackett, Madison, Marks, a Madison ace and set error from the Hawks for a 10-4 lead.
A kill and ace from Oaks and two McKenna kills upped the Lancers' advantage to 17-8. The set then came to a close thanks to three McKenna kills, a spike from Webster and Zimmerer ace.
Two Gilley aces and kills from McKenna, Oaks and Marks started set three on a 6-1 run for CBU. Holy Names scrapped back within two, 7-5, but the Lancers went on an 18-4 run from there to end the match.
