Lancers Sweep Eagles For 26th Win

LA MIRADA, Calif. – When Biola and California Baptist University first met this season, it took five sets for the Lancers to pull out the victory. The second-ranked Lancers in NCAA Division II came out fired up on the road and swept the Eagles to record their 26th win in a row on Saturday.
CBU has already locked up the PacWest title and improved to 26-0, 18-0 in the conference on Saturday, as it looks to secure hosting rights for the D-II West Regional, as well. Biola drops to 20-7, 13-5 but does not drop out of third place in the conference standings.
The Lancers head to Hawaii to wrap up the regular season at Hawaii-Hilo and Chaminade next Friday and Saturday, respectively. The NCAA Division II Selection Show will take place on Nov. 20th at 4:30 p.m. PDT.
Blocking and serving went hand-in-hand and fueled CBU to victory on Saturday. The Lancers logged six aces, while not giving one up, and out blocked the Eagles 10-2. It held Biola to a .111 hitting percentage (31-18-117), while CBU attacked at a .297 clip (48-13-118).
Sydney Kralj had another impressive performance at setter, with 36 assists, 13 digs, two kills, an ace and a block. Madison and McKenna Witt put up 12 and 11 kills, respectively, along with nine digs each. Madison Witt hit .308 (12-4-26) and had three blocks, while McKenna logged five blocks and four aces.
Lauren Hackett did a bit of everything, as well, with nine kills and six digs, while Elizabeth Gilley anchored the back row with 19 digs in just three sets.
Sydney Marks was dynamic in the middle, with nine kills on 16 swings for a .438 percentage (9-2-16) and five blocks. Yagoda Jedrzejczak also had six blocks and five kills on a .444 mark (5-1-9) for the Lancers.
Biola took a 3-1 lead to start set one, but the Lancers scored 11 of the next 12 points to take a 12-4 upper hand. Marks had two kills and a block in that run, while Hackett also had two kills and Madison added a kill and ace.
The Eagles interrupted the run momentarily, but the Lancers pushed their lead to 19-9 on a combo block from McKenna and Jedrzejczak, along with a kill from each player. Biola managed to cut its deficit back down to eight, 21-13, but the Lancers scored the final four points on a kill from Marks, Hackett, McKenna and a team block from Marks and Jedrzejczak.
Things were close in set two, with CBU holding a 16-14 lead. A block from Madison and Marks sparked a 4-0 run, which included two more blocks from Marks, to give the Lancers a 20-14 lead. Biola clawed back within two, 23-21, to force a timeout from the visitors. CBU came out of the break and got a kill from Jedrzejczak and ace from Kralj to give the Lancers the two-set lead.
After opening the third set to a 6-6 tie, the Lancers scored four-straight to take a 10-6 lead on two Biola errors, a McKenna ace and Marks kill. The Eagles stayed within three points of the Lancers, 13-10, but CBU quickly changed that with a 7-0 run. Two blocks from McKenna and Jedrzejczak and two kills from McKenna added to the run that helped put the match away in three sets.
