CBU Topples HNU

OAKLAND — With four games left in the regular season, No. 5-ranked California Baptist University is looking to finish stronger than ever. The Lancers showed that grit Thursday night, beating Holy Names 86-66.
CBU, which currently sits in the top spot in the West Region, improves to 23-2 overall and 15-2 in the PacWest. It keeps the Lancers in the race for the conference championship, staying just a half game behind No. 8-ranked Hawai'i Pacific (16-2 in the PacWest). HNU drops to 6-19 on the year, 5-12 in conference, with the loss.
Five Lancers finished the night in double figures, led by Kalidou Diouf with 15 points (5-for-9). Danny King continued his impressive play with a career-high 14 points (6-for-8). The redshirt junior was perfect in his shooting in the first half. Jason Todd chipped in 12 points (5-for-9), while Marquise Mosely (4-for-8) and Bul Kuol (4-for-4) – who didn't miss a single shot all game – each added 11 points.
CBU crushed the glass, out-rebounded the Hawks 43-to-27, with local boy De'jon Davis grabbing a team-high 10 boards. Jason Todd snagged nine rebounds, while Mason Stuteville contributed with six missed shots off the glass.
It didn't take long for the Lancers to jump out in front by double-digits, opening the game on a 14-4 run. Diouf sparked the run with an and-one opportunity before King started his scoring spree.
The Hawks tried to keep the Lancers under control, but the margin continued to grow as CBU distanced itself further and further away.
After HNU cut the score to 19-10, Stuteville knocked down a three-pointer off an offensive rebound and followed with two chances at the line, 24-10, just about halfway through the first half. Less than three minutes later, CBU was threatening a 20-point cushion off two free throws from Diouf, 31-13.
The 20-point lead came with five minutes left before halftime as Casey Norris (nine points, four assists) drained a three-pointer, 40-20.
HNU managed to cut the lead to 50-32 at halftime, but there was no stopping CBU.
After Kuol put the Lancers up by 28 with a deep three, Mosley drew a foul and finished both his chances at the charity stripe to extend the cushion to 30 points, 82-52.
It was the largest margin CBU would hold, however, as the Hawks managed to slice away at the cushion in the waning minutes to only allow the Lancers the 86-66 victory.
The Lancers continue in the Bay Area for one more game, taking on Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. tip. CBU returns to SoCal but has one last game on the road, at Concordia University of Irvine on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., before hosting Point Loma for the "last time in Van Dyne" game on Feb. 25 at 8:00 p.m.
