LA JOLLA, Calif. — Like it has all year, California Baptist University put up another fight in a four-set loss to UC San Diego Tuesday night.

The Lancers drop to 3-16 overall, 1-13 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Tritons improve to 6-15 on the year, 3-11 in conference.

Luis Palos and Kevin Vaz led the Lancers with 13 kills each, while Caleb Miller finished with four blocks, including two solo stuffs.

After dropping the first set 25-18, CBU came battling back in the second.

Miller gave the Lancers their first multi-point lead after denying a Triton attack attempt at the net, 7-5. UCSD evened the set at 7-7 and took over the upper hand at 11-8, forcing a CBU timeout.

The Lancers came out of the break with two-straight points, a kill from Vaz and a UCSD attack error, to pull within one. CBU then took over momentum with three-straight points to jump in front 14-13. An error at the line from the Tritons sparked the run before Phillip Schick grabbed an ace and Miller and Jacob Tarabetz teamed up for a combo block.

It forced a UCSD timeout, but CBU kept in front, 16-14.

Palos gave the Lancers set point with an ace, 24-21, but UCSD made things interesting, tying the set 24-24. Determined to not let the set get out of its hands, CBU got the sideout point and then Cody Jackson sealed the victory with an ace, 26-24.

The Tritons fought back in the third to pull ahead 2-1 in the match with a 25-16 set win.

CBU looked to force five and took the lead three-straight points off kills from Palos and Miller, along with a Miller and Palos block, 14-13.

UCSD took back the lead and managed to fend off a furious comeback attempt by the Lancers to take the set 25-22 for the match victory.

The Lancers head out on a five-match road trip to the East Coast, starting Friday with a match at Penn State.
