BELMONT, N.C. — With its third-straight three-set sweep California Baptist University comes back to California with some momentum. The Lancers defeated Belmont Abbey 25-22, 25-20, 29-27 for the 3-0 victory Friday night.
CBU improves to 6-18 as it returns to conference action next week. The Crusaders drop to 4-16 on the year with the loss.
Kevin Vaz and Rohit Paul led the Lancers with nine kills each, while Enrique de Diego Garcia chipped in seven kills, committing just one error. Vaz also posted six blocks defensively, while Emmett Enriques had a game-high 11 digs.
Belmont Abbey opened the set with a 4-0 run, but it wasn't long before the Lancers caught their rhythm. CBU battled back to one, 5-4, off a combination stuff from Vaz and Caleb Miller, but the Crusaders jumped back in front 8-4.
After exchanging points with The Abbey, CBU exploded off on a 7-0 run to take over the lead, 12-9. The Lancers' block came to life in that span with Philip Schick and Vaz combining on two stuffs and a Schick/Paul team up put CBU in front 12-9.
The Crusaders tried to regain the lead, pulling within one (22-21) but CBU wasn't having it as Vaz and Miller sealed the 25-22 set win with a combo block.
CBU carried momentum into the second set and took an early 4-1 lead. Garcia gave the Lancers the first two kills of the set, before an attack error and a Paul/Miller block put CBU in the lead by three points.
The Lancers soon doubled their three-point lead into a six-point cushion off back-to-back Vaz and Garcia kills, a Schick ace, and another Garcia kill up the middle, 11-5.
Belmont Abbey climbed back to a three-point deficit, 19-16, but consecutive kills from Garcia and Vaz forced a Crusader timeout. An attack error from the Crusaders kept momentum in CBU's favor, 22-16, out of the break.
The Abbey tried to rally back, 23-20, but Miller smacked down a kill from the middle and a Crusader mishap gave CBU the 25-20 set win to hold a 2-0 lead in the match.
Things got interesting in the third as Belmont Abbey battled from behind 24-21 to jump in front 25-24, its first set-point situation of the night.
CBU was determined not to let the match go into a fourth set and tied things back up 25-25 on a Luis Palos kill. Palos then sealed the 29-27 win for the three-set sweep with an ace.
The Lancers return home and to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action, hosting No. 15-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, March 30, at 7:00 p.m.
