CBU Fights Back Against Sunbirds

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Down three with five minutes, 12 seconds left in regulation and then two with 1:51 left, California Baptist University fought all the way back to force overtime with Fresno Pacific Saturday.
Fresno Pacific came away with the overtime 8-7 victory, however, to end the Lancers' season at the Golden Coast Conference Championships at the Sullivan Aquatic Center at Santa Clara University. The Sunbirds improve to 15-15 and will play Santa Clara in the GCC fifth-place game on Sunday.
CBU finishes the year with a 17-14 overall record and says goodbye to six influential seniors: Emily Cardona, Jessica Castellano, Paizlee Dreyer, Lina Medeiros, Brittany McWaid and Valerie Spezzaferri.
Spezzaferri led CBU's comeback attempt, with three goals, two assists and two steals. Castellano added two goals, an assist and steal, while Dreyer added two assists and a steal. Medeiros finished with five saves and three steals in the cage.
The Sunbirds went into the fourth quarter with what seemed to be a comfortable 5-2 margin. Spezzaferri won the opening sprint on a jump ball. The ball worked its way over to Castellano, who buried a goal from deep off a Lizette Perez (one goal) assist 16 seconds into the quarter.
A steal from Abi Auer put the Lancers back on the attack, and they drew an exclusion on the counter. It led to Spezzaferri scoring off a Castellano pass, making it a 5-4 game with 6:53 to play.
FPU seemed to put the comeback out of the question with two-straight goals, up 7-4 with 5:12 remaining in regulation, but CBU never gave up. A Castellano steal led to a Spezzaferri goal off a Dreyer pass with 1:51 to go.
With 35 seconds left, Spezzaferri scored again on a Dreyer assist to make it 7-6. Fresno Pacific then committed a devastating turnover that left Auer and Annie Eubanks with a two-on-none. Eubanks scored from close range to tie things, 7-7, with six seconds left to send it to overtime.
The Sunbirds came up with the one goal in overtime, however, to escape with the win.
