SAN FRANCISCO — Seventh-ranked California Baptist University picked up right where it last left off, putting together another statement victory Friday evening, this time coming on the first road trip of the season.
At the San Francisco State Invitational, the Lancers grabbed their second first-place finish of the year, beating its closest competition by 58 points. CBU finished with 17 team points, beating out Humboldt State (third, 75 points) and conference foe Academy of Art (third, 80 points).
"It was pretty exciting to see the whole team work so well together," said Coach Ben Gall. "I believe it was definitely a continuation of our first meet and we just wanted to get stronger and stay together, which we were able to do."
The Lancers showed great depth with four of the Lancers' fastest runners finishing in the top five. Anett Somogyi led the Lancers, and finished first overall, with a time of 21 minutes, 11.5 seconds.
"It was definitely a great performance from her," said Gall. "It was encouraging for her to start off so well and I was just proud of the way she finished."
"I enjoyed the whole run," said Somogyi. "My teammates got close to me at the end but I had enough power left to finish through. I'm so proud of the team, everybody did a good job and I'm looking forward to our next races."
Emeline Delanis wasn't far behind her fellow Lancer, as she finished second with a time of 21:16.6. Leanda du Bruyn followed Delanis, putting together a strong run as well, with a time of 21:29.0, while Fruzsi Ladanyi took fourth with her time of 21:41.8.
Katie Deimling took sixth in 21:59.6, while Kate Robinson (22:00.6) and Berenice Cleyet-Merle (22:38.1) followed behind. Caroline Barkechir and Natalia Novak simultaneously crossed the finish line with a time of 22:47.4, followed by Amelia Czerwinska, who finished in 22:56.3.
"This race really gives us a lot of momentum going forward," said Gall. "We're gonna see some of the top-ranked teams in the country coming up, so that will be a great test."
The Lancers take two weeks to prepare for their next race, as they head to Chicago for the Lewis University Conference Cross-Over on Oct. 10, with an 8:00 a.m. start time.
