CHICAGO — No. 6-ranked California Baptist University competed in two events Saturday morning, with the top-11 runners racing in the Lewis University Conference Crossover in Chicago and the other Lancers traveling to UC San Diego for the Triton Invitational.
The Lancers – who also rank second in the West Region – had a historic day at the Lewis Crossover, taking first overall with 51 points. It bested top-ranked Grand Valley State, which finished in second place with 66 points, and No.4-ranked Hillsdale, which took fifth overall with 192 points.
"This win today means a lot to us for sure," said Coach Ben Gall. "Beating two teams that hardly lose in Grand Valley State and Hillsdale is huge for us, it was definitely an exciting moment."
CBU was led by a trio of Lancers with Emeline Delanis at the head of the group. She took third overall in 21 minutes, 36 seconds. Right behind Delanis was Fruzsi Ladanyi in fourth with a time of 21:46.6, while Leanda du Bruyn came in fifth, posting a time of 21:47.7.
"I was very happy with our top-three women, they really performed strong today and carried the team," said Gall. "Anett Somogyi stuck with that group as well and I was proud of Caroline Barkechir, definitely looks like she's on her way back."
Somogyi took 12th overall with a final time of 22:09.3, while Katie Deimling took 27th in 22:30.4. Katherine Robinson (22:43.3), Barkechir (22:48.8) – who has been battling some injuries – and Kim Rabenstein (23:09.1) came flying in to round out places 52nd, 54th and 107th, respectively. Berenice Cleyet-Merle clocked in at 23:25.7, followed by Tori Dutchover, who clocked in at 23:32.8.
Amelia Czerwinska finished in 23:33.7, while true freshmen Natalia Novak, clocked in at 23:50.6.

She was followed by Morgan Spurlock, with a time of 24:35.62, and Charlie Davidson, who crossed the finish line in 24:41.37.
"We definitely have a lot of confidence going forward right now," said Gall. "Everyone came out today and ran strong, and now we're just focused on the PacWest Conference Championship."
CBU now has two weeks to prepare, before heading to Oakland for the PacWest Championship on Oct. 21, with an 9:00 a.m. start time, hoping to grab its fourth-straight and fifth overall title.
