RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted its Annual Canned Food Drive this week and collected a record 10,267 cans of food. It not only was a new single-year high for items collected, but nearly doubled the previous record.
"I'm proud of how our student-athletes stepped up to help us break our record for food collected," Director of Athletics, Dr. Micah Parker said. "Giving back by helping others is something we hope our entire department embraces."
All of the collected food items are donated to Feeding America, the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization, around the Thanksgiving holiday. The Feeding America network consists of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs, committed to fighting hunger in communities across America.
"SAAC hosting the food drive each year is a great way to help everyone recognize and meet the needs of the hungry in our area," Assistant Athletic Director for Student Support/Senior Woman Administrator and SAAC Advisor Rachel Keys said. "We are happy to partner together with Feeding America to accomplish this goal."
Cheerleading, dance and the women's soccer teams all collected 1,000-plus canned food items this year. Cheerleading led the way 3,663, while dance and soccer followed with 1,093 and 1,088, respectively. Baseball was not far behind the top three with 955.
The Lancers also hosted a canned food drive game on Tuesday when women's basketball took on Cal State Fullerton in the CBU Events center. Fans who brought a canned food item were given complimentary admission to the game.
