COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Led by a deep squad of distance swimmers and solid platform diving Saturday, California Baptist University finished third overall at the Mizzou Invitational.
The Lancers climbed up a spot to place third out of 11 schools, many featuring strong swimming and diving programs. CBU finished with 576 points, behind host Missouri and Brigham Young at the Mizzou Aquatics Center.
"A facility of that stature, it's very modern and has a fast pool,'' CBU coach Rick Rowland said. "It has an incredible diving facility. We've seen some of the nation's best times at this meet.''
CBU's Scott Tolman took second place Saturday in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of one minute 56.34 seconds – a B-cut qualifying time. Brandon Schuster finished eighth in the 200 breast and Sean Foster placed 11th.
A B-cut time earns a spot in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America National Invitational Championships in March. Schuster qualified Friday with a B standard time in the 400 individual medley.
Garret Chew was impressive in the men's platform diving final with a fifth-place finish, thanks to 299.50 points. Tyler Stevens took ninth place (229.05) for CBU, while Zane Freeman came in 12th (196.80).
"One of the reasons we moved up was diving,'' Rowland said. "That was the first time we've competed in platform in the history of the program.''
The Lancers' trio of Adityastha Wratsangka, Quinn Birtles and Justin Quiroga finished in the top eight of the 200-yard butterfly finals.
"We showed a lot of depth in the breast and in the fly,'' Rowland said.
In the 100-yard freestyle race, Jacob Leahy took seventh in 44.34. Jerome Heidrich finished 11th with a mark of 44.64.
Robert Moseley also shined in the 200-yard backstroke, placing seventh (1:46.17).
In the distance race, the 1,650 freestyle, Josh Fluetsch placed 10th with a mark of 15:58.78. CBU's David Miller (11th, 15:58.82), Colton Babcock (12th, 15:59.61) and Quinn Birtles (14th, 16:04.00) also finished in the top 16.
"We have a really strong distance team with a lot a depth," Rowland said. "That's a credit to our great distance coach Lisa Siregar."
