LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – California Baptist University found itself on the wrong side of its fourth game of the season that was decided by either one possession or overtime, as it fell to Howard University, 86-84, at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers opened up the game strong with a breakout performance by junior De'jon Davis. Davis scored six of the first seven points of the game for CBU, and finished with a career-high 26 points. Davis also added a game-high 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
CBU led by as many as 12 points in the first half when sophomore Milan Acquaah hit a three pointer giving the Lancers a 29-17 advantage with 7:49 remaining. Howard would respond in a big way, outscoring the Lancers by 18 points over the next 12:30 of the game spanning from the end of the first half and the start of the second.
The Lancers held a 38-35 advantage at halftime, but Howard opened up the second half with a 17-8 run to go up by six with 15:19 remaining in the game. The Bison would remain in control, holding on to a six point lead with 11:38 left on the clock.
CBU senior Jordan Heading led a fearless comeback for the Lancers by scoring 11 points over a 5:45 span of time that included three treys, giving CBU a 74-73 lead with 5:05 left in the game. The contest would remain tight the rest of the way.
In the final minute, Howard went up 83-80 with a dunk by Charles Williams with 48 seconds left. Williams finished the game with 22 points.
CBU's Bul Kuol went to the free throw line for a pair of free throws with 35 seconds left, but was only able to convert on one of the attempts making the score 83-81 in favor of Howard.
The Lancers played hard defense trying to force a turnover before fouling Howard's Andre Toure with 20 ticks left on the clock. Toure stepped up to the line as a 40.9% (9-of-22) free throw shooter for the season, and made both shots giving the Bison a four point advantage at 85-81.
The Lancers remained fearless. Acquaah had two chances from beyond the arc and was able to score on the second attempt thanks to an offensive rebound by Heading. CBU only trailed by one with 3.2 seconds left.
Howard's Chad Lott was sent to the line for a pair of free throws where he missed the first attempt. Lott made the second shot giving Howard a two point lead. After a Howard timeout, Acquaah had the ball and made a valiant effort with a shot beyond halfcourt that would have won the game, but it fell short as time expired sealing the final score of 86-84.
Acquaah, a transfer from Washington State, finished the game with 24 points and six rebounds. Heading added 15 points, six rebounds and four assists.
RJ Cole, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference preseason player of the year, led the way for Howard with 31 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Howard improves to 5-2 on the year while the Lancers are now 2-4. CBU has played its last five games on the road and will complete the six-game away stretch on Thursday at crosstown foe UC Riverside. The Lancers have not played at home since their season opening win against San Diego Christian on Nov. 9, but will return home to take on Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 1.
