RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist put together its most complete game of the season and shot a season-high 52 percent from the field in an 80-70 victory over UC Riverside in the Crosstown Showdown at SRC Arena on Thursday night.
CBU junior De'jon Davis followed up a career-high scoring performance against Howard on Saturday with another double-double tonight. Davis scored 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe along with a season-high 14 rebounds. Davis has been dominant in the past three games averaging 21.7 points and 10.3 rebounds.
Lancer sophomore Milan Acquaah had another outstanding performance leading all scorers in the game with 24 points while pulling down five rebounds. Acquaah has scored 20 or more points in five of the seven games played this season and currently leads the Western Athletic Conference with a 20.6 scoring average.
The two schools – with campuses separated by just over eight miles – battled back and forth to start the game with the score knotted at 17-17 just under 11 minutes into the contest, but the Lancers used a 20-7 run in the final 8:54 of the first half to take control of the game. Acquaah added an exclamation point to the run hitting a three pointer as time expired, and sent the Lancers to the locker room in enthusiastic fashion with a 37-24 advantage at the break.
The Lancers opened up the second half shooting a blistering 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the field in the first 12 minutes. However, UCR came out shooting hot as well to help keep the Lancers within reach at 62-49 with 7:54 remaining in the contest.
Jordan Heading, CBU's lone senior, provided fearless leadership late in the game scoring 13 points after being blanked in the first half. Heading went 4-of-6 from the field (1-of-3 3FG) and 4-4 from the free throw line in the second stanza.
CBU led by as many as 17 in the second half with 9:26 left on the clock, but the Highlanders used a 15-6 run to make it 68-60 with 2:51 remaining in the game. UCR was unable to cut into the lead any further from that point. The Lancers went on to make all eight free throws attempted in the final minute of the game and finished 19-of-24 at the line.
Jordan Gilliam and Dikymbe Martin led the way for UCR scoring 18 points each.
UC Riverside falls to 2-6 on the year, while CBU is now 3-4. The Lancers return home on Saturday after completing a six-game road swing to take on Mississippi Valley State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
