PHOENIX – Great individual performances kept California Baptist University close to Grand Canyon on Saturday. There was little between both teams in the first two sets, but the Lopes pulled out each one en route to a 25-23, 25-22, 25-13 win in the GCU Arena.
Nicole Abreu led the Lancers' backline defense with 22 digs to average more than seven a set. Summer Avery had a team-high 11 kills on a .294 percentage (11-1-34), eight digs, two blocks and an ace. CBU moves to 19-8, 9-5 in the Western Athletic Conference with the loss, while the Lopes improve to 11-13, 4-8.
Natalie Zimmerer also had 28 assists, 10 digs and three blocks, while Tesa Oaks almost had a double-double herself with 10 digs, two blocks and nine kills. Yagoda Jedrzejczak had a team-high five blocks, while Sydney Marks added six kills and four blocks.
There are three matches left in the regular season for CBU. The Lancers travel to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley to take on the current leader in the WAC on Thursday at 5 p.m. PDT. Conference action comes to a close with a trip to NM State Saturday for a 10 a.m. first serve.
