RIVERSIDE, Calif. – California Baptist University clocked five more automatic-qualifying times for the 2019 College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America National Invitational Championship on Saturday at the Lancer Swim/Dive Invitational.
The Lancers dominated their home invite with 2,088 points, while no other team logged more than 661 points over both days. CBU's biggest successes came in the relays on Saturday, as two Lancer teams in both the 200-yard medley and 400 free logged automatic qualifiers for the NIC.
"It's great to qualify everyone we did this week, we already booked some plane tickets so we have to get some bodies in those seats," Coach Rick Rowland said. "The team is excited to compete there for the first time. There are going to be some big teams there."
It made for some friendly competition between teammates, as the Lancers pushed each other throughout the whole week. Fittingly, the 400-yard freestyle relay was one of the most exciting finishes of the day.
There was just .04 of a second separating first and second place in the 400-free relay. Jerome Heidrich, Scott Tolman, Tanner Shore and Justin Quiroga just edged out the Lancers' B team with a time of three minutes, 3.06 seconds. Josh Walters, Colton Babcock, Robert Moseley and Jacob Leahy put together an automatic time of 3:03.10 in second place.
Two 200-medley teams picked up qualifying times for the NIC, too. Leahy, Tolman, Quiroga and Heidrich won it in one minute, 31.03 seconds, while Moseley, Sean Foster, Josh Walters and Shore took second in 1:31.95.
The Lancers placed first through in the 800-free relay, with Heidrich, Babcock, Leahy and Quiroga winning it in 6:52.62.
Five more Lancers secured automatic NIC times in the 100 individual medley. CBU swept first through ninth in the event, with Moseley winning it in 51.37, while Tolman (52.28), Walters (52.45), Heidrich (52.56) and Quiroga (52.84) all came in under the NIC qualifier of 52.99.
"Robert Moseley comes to race for every event, no doubt about it," Rowland said. "He swam some different events, he is a good medley swimmer and was impressive in all strokes today. He was one of the freshmen who had a really good meet."
Adityastha Wratsangka, Zane Freeman, Walters and Tolman each won two individual events for the Lancers on Saturday. Wratsangka won the 400 IM (4:04.81) and 200 fly (1:50.43) and Walters took the 100 fly (49.20) and 100 back (50.06), while Tolman was victorious in the 100 breast (55.76) and 200 breast (2:03.43).
Freeman, Garret Chew and Tyler Stevens took first through third on both boards Saturday. Freeman won the 1-meter with 253.35 points and put up a 302.45 at 3-meter.
The Lancers got three other individual wins from Heidrich in the 100 free (44.95), Babcock in the 200 free (1:39.97) and Matthew Niculae in the 200 back (1:51.46).
