OAKLAND — California Baptist University took care of business on the road, grabbing an 89-52 win at Holy Names to finish the regular season, with everyone getting in on the action Saturday night.
The Lancers improve to 17-11 overall, 14-6 in the PacWest with their ninth-straight victory. The Hawks close out the season with a 4-24, 3-17 conference mark.
Six Lancers finished the night in double figures, with everyone playing a part in the win. Ane Olaeta led CBU with 15 points (6-for-11), while also dishing out a game-high four assists. Akayla Hackson finished with a career-high 14 points (5-for-7), while Emma Meriggioli (4-for-6) chipped in 12 points. Georgia Dale (5-for-9), Tori Mitchell (5-for-12) and Blaysen Varnadoe (5-for-10) all added 11 points in the win.
CBU out-rebounded the Hawks 57-to-42 with Emily Schmidt leading the charge with 11 boards. Meriggioli and Dale were right on the cusp of double-doubles with eight rebounds each, which was a career output for Dale.
Both teams battled in the opening 10 minutes, with CBU holding a one-point cushion heading into the second quarter, 18-17.
The Lancers turned things around in the second, creating some separation off a Mitchell jumper from Varnadoe with six minutes left before halftime. HNU kept the Lancers from grabbing too much momentum, trailing 38-32 at the break.
After HNU pulled within six, 40-34, in the early goings of the third quarter, CBU responded with a 9-1 run to jump in front by 14 points. Mitchell started the spurt with a free throw, before Dale grabbed an and-one and went coast-to-coast on the next play.
The Hawks called a timeout, but Meriggioli drained a trey to cap the run, 49-35.
CBU kept rolling, building its lead up to 25 points, 62-37. The Lancers were feeling comfortable, getting fancy on the offensive end as Dale handed off a no-look, behind-the-back pass to Akayla to give the visitors some cushion, 56-37, with just about three minutes left in the third.
With 10 minutes left to play, the Lancers closed out the final period strong and out-scored the Hawks 23-to-11.
Olaeta broke the 30-point margin with 3:39 remaining on the clock, knocking down a triple from the corner.
CBU closed out the final two minutes of the game on a 7-0 run to seal the 89-52 victory. Emma Madsen scored consecutive layups in the run, which was capped by a Lexy Ram trey.
The Lancers shift focus to the postseason now, with the PacWest Conference Tournament next on the docket. CBU will host the tournament in the CBU Events Center March 1-3, with final seedings coming out Monday.
