RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A strong fall put California Baptist University near the top of the NCAA Division II Learfield Directors' Cup standings, and then a strong winter shot the Lancers up to the very top with the release of the final winter standings on Thursday morning.
CBU currently leads all 240 schools who have registered a point in Learfield's Division II standings with 614.50 total points. The winter standings took into account CBU's men's and women's basketball, swimming and diving and wrestling teams, along with sports the Lancers do not offer: hockey, rifle, skiing and indoor track and field.
After sweeping all five PacWest titles in the fall, the Lancers added three more conference titles in the winter, with them all coming in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Both CBU swim/dive teams and wrestling won their conference titles and went on to impressive performances in Division II.
Men's swim/dive tied for a school-best finish in D-II by taking second place. Wrestling also took third place at its NCAA meet, while women's swim/dive came in 10th. Not to be outdone, Lancer men's basketball won its first-ever West Region title on the road at third-seeded Western Oregon to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.
In all, it gave the Lancers 315.50 points toward the Learfield Cup this winter. The next Division II standings will be released Thursday, May 17.
