RIVERSIDE – An impressive double-double from De'jon Davis led California Baptist University in its 2K Empire Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project finale on Saturday night.
Davis, who was named to the 2K Empire Classic All-Tournament Team, finished with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, 12 rebounds, and three blocks in a 67-60 loss to Georgia State in the CBU Events Center. Brandon Boyd added 13 points on a trio of three-pointers, and also had five rebounds. Milan Acquaah logged nine points, six assists, and five rebounds.
The Lancers and Panthers both move to 3-3 on the year. CBU will continue its four-game homestand against South Dakota on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CBU will then host UC Riverside for the Crosstown Showdown Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m.
It was hot three-point shooting and Davis that put the Lancers up early. Davis recorded 15 of his points, on 6-for-7 shooting, five of his rebounds and two of his blocks in the first half.
Davis' dominant presence down low opened things up for CBU on the perimeter. The Lancers knocked down seven triples and hit on nearly half of their attempts (15) in the first half. All the while, the Lancer defense did not give up a three to the Panthers over the first 20 minutes.
Three of the Lancers' first four buckets and 15 of their first 21 points came on three-pointers. Ferron Flavors Jr. put CBU up 21-12 about halfway through the first half on his second three.
Georgia State fought back to cut the deficit down to as little as four, but the Lancers unleashed a 7-0 run that took just a minute to put them back up by eight, 40-32, at halftime.
The highlight of the first came in the final two minutes. Davis knocked down a corner three 1:45 before the break and then rebounded a missed three from GSU at the other end. It put the Lancers on a fastbreak, with Acquaah finding Lo for an alley-oop that got the home crowd on its feet.
CBU scored the first seven points of the second half to push its lead to as many as 15, 47-34, but GSU turned things around from there to pull out the win.
