RIVERSIDE – A dominant second half propelled California Baptist University to a 93-70 win on opening night of the 2019-20 season in the CBU Events Center on Tuesday.
CBU started the second half on an 18-3 run to flip what was a tightly contested first half into a blowout victory. The Lancers won the second half by 17 points, 57-40, in all.
"We had some struggles in the first half, but we came out determined in the second half," said head coach Rick Croy. "It's a different deal when you play in front of the home crowd we have here in the CBU Events Center. It's 4,500-plus strong, and they had the place rocking tonight."
The Lancer faithful were in full force as the official attendance was recorded at 4,976.
Ferron Flavors Jr. and Brandon Boyd made quite the debut to the Lancer faithful. Flavors, Jr., a redshirt junior transfer from Fairfield, scored a team-high 20 points on 6-for-10 shooting and 4-of-5 from three. Boyd, a redshirt senior transfer from Idaho State, added 16 points.
CBU starts the year out at 1-0, while Jackson State begins at 0-1. It's a good start for the Lancers, who won 16 games last year to set an NCAA record for most wins by a first-year team that is not an RPI counter. Jackson State came into the game not allowing a single team to score over 90 points during the 2018-19 season and being ranked 41st nationally for 65.8 points per game allowed.
The Lancers continue the first week of the season at home against California Lutheran for a 7 p.m. tipoff in the CBU Events Center. Fans can follow along live, with video on the WAC Digital Network, stats from StatBroadcast, and on the radio at Fox Sports 1350.

Boyd started the run with a layup, while Flavors, Jr. and Rowell both added layups around a strong dunk from Davis. A corner three from Reed Nottage a second before the halftime buzzer capped off the charge from CBU.
