Lancers Clash With Lopes In Riverside
1/11/2020 3:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball
RIVERSIDE -- California Baptist University erased a 13-point, Grand Canyon lead in the fourth quarter with under a minute to go, but the Lopes held on for a close 62-58 win in the CBU Events Center.
Ane Olaeta had another stellar outing, scoring a game high 20 points to go along with nine assists in the Western Athletic Conference game. Olaeta sparked the late rally, as she had a hand in 15 of the team's 19 points in the fourth quarter.
Tiena Afu had a big game all the way around. The senior scored eight points, including a game-tying three-pointer with under a minute to go, and ripped down a new career-high 15 rebounds. She also played impressive defense despite being outsized and had two steals in the game.
California Baptist played its cleanest game of the season as it committed just six turnovers. The Lancers made multiple rallies during the game, as it mounted a significant charge in the third quarter, but GCU grabbed a season-high 42 rebounds in the victory.
The Lancers' 8-10 overall and 0-4 conference records are deceiving. Three of their WAC games have come by five points or less. Coach Jarred Olson knows how close they really are.
"Defensively we've been better since Christmas," Olson said, "with the week off we can sharpen up some things on offense and continue to build on defense and give ourselves a chance to win in Chicago in two weeks."
The win gives GCU a 6-7 record overall, improving to 1-1 in the WAC. The Lancers will have 11 days to practice and prepare for their next game on the road at Chicago State on Jan. 22 in the Jones Convocation Center.
