RIVERSIDE – Ane Olaeta and Lexy Ram combined to score 45 points in California Baptist University's win over Utah Valley, which came into the game tied for first in the Western Athletic Conference.
"Ane Olaeta and Lexy Ram were awesome, and Georgia Dale really had a big game for us," Head Coach Jarrod Olson said after the game. "Ane was organizing the offense and getting the ball moving, and you could see Georgia, Lex and Tiena Afu being able to finish those plays because she was making it easy for them."
Olaeta's incredible game-high 23 points is her second-highest total of the season. It was the most efficient game of her career, as she shot 90 percent (9-10) from the field. Her previous best was 81.8 percent (9-11) in a game against Chicago State last season.
At one point during the first quarter, Olaeta scored 10 of 13 Lancer points to tie the game at 19 all. When she wasn't scoring, she was still contributing in a major way, as she dished out seven assists and grabbed five rebounds.
Ram scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to help seal the victory for CBU. Ram has started to ramp up her game, as she's averaging 19.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game over the last three contests while shooting at a 61.5 percent clip from the field.
Dale did a lot with a little, scoring 16 points on just seven shots and also nabbed a game-high three steals.
Afu has been a dynamo for the Lancers this season, doing whatever is needed to help the team succeed -- today was no different. Afu scored 12 points and filled up the stat sheet with five boards, four assists and a pair of steals.
The first quarter saw both teams get off to hot starts, with the Lancers shooting 47.1 percent and the Wolverines at an incredible 61.1 percent pace. Despite the percentage gap, the Wolverines managed just a 27-23 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes.
The teams came back down to earth a bit in the second quarter scoring an identical 12 points apiece. Still very tight throughout the third quarter, the turning point came after the media timeout at 2:09.
"Utah Valley had pushed ahead by five, and they had made a couple hustle plays right before the timeout to give themselves the lead," Olson noted. "It just felt like there was a determination by our team during that timeout to just outwork them and make those hustle plays, which gave us a little extra energy and bounce, which led to the ball going in the hoop."
The Lancer defense showed its teeth, holding Utah Valley without a field goal for nearly five-and-a-half minutes at the end of the third, and beginning of the fourth quarters.
The final period started with the Lancers up by just two points, but it ended with a 13-point margin of victory courtesy of Ram, Olaeta, Dale and Afu, who scored all 26 of the Lancers points.
As a team, the Lancers lead by as many as 14 in the final frame and assisted on 23 of 29 made baskets, their highest percentage against a Division I opponent this year.
The win boosts CBU to 10-11 on the year and 2-5 in the conference. The Lancers are back in action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. when they host the Seattle U Redhawks in the CBU Events Center.
