Tarleton State is in its first year of the transition period to full NCAA Division I membership, set to end in July 2024. Before joining the WAC in July 2020, the Texans belonged to the NCAA DII Lone Star Conference.
Notable Notes:
- Both the Texans and the Lancers enter the week in search of their first WAC win of the season.
- The Texans are 2-4 on the season and have wins over Dallas Christian and Arlington Baptist.
- Before joining the NCAA DI ranks, the Texans appeared in 14 NCAA DII Tournaments with a combined record of 22-14.
- Montre Gipson, Tahj Small, and Jonathan Jackson Jr. lead the Texans offensively, as all three players are averaging double figures on the season.
- Gipson is the team's leading scorer with 16.0 points per game, as he's coming off a career-high 30 points against GCU in Friday's 72-75 loss.
- Tarleton is under new guidance for the 2020-21 season, as Billy Gillispie was named the head coach back in March 2020.
- Gillispie becomes Tarleton's 15th head coach in the program's history. He holds a 148-108 coaching record in the DI ranks, with stops at Kentucky, Texas A&M, and UTEP. He has been named Coach of the Year 12 times during his career and has guided his teams to four NCAA Tournament appearances.
