
CBU Rallies Back From Several Deficits to Defeat Abilene Christian In Five Sets

ABILENE – California Baptist University volleyball rattled off its fourth-straight win in impressive fashion, as it rallied back from a deficit several times to pull off a five-set win on the road at Abilene Christian. The victory puts the Lancers in a first-place tie in the Western Athletic Conference West Division standings.
The Lancers came back from a first-set loss, a third-set loss and a 4-0 deficit in set five to finally defeat the Wildcats 25-27, 28-26, 21-25, 25-18, 15-10. CBU enjoyed big advantages in aces (11-6) and blocks (13-9) to improve to 11-8 on the year and 6-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. ACU drops to 7-11, 1-6.
Tesa Oaks, Hana Okuhara and Leah Pease all turned in monster double-doubles. Oaks led the Lancers with 17 kills on a .295 hitting percentage (17-4-44) and also had 19 digs, two blocks and an ace. Okuhara posted 33 assists, 11 digs and two aces, while Pease added 27 assists, 11 digs and two aces, as well.
Paige Johnstone continued to be a force, as the junior libero had a match-high 26 digs and three aces. It's Johnstone's fifth match with 20 digs or more this season and third match in a row.
Scherine Dahoue put together a season-high 16 kills on a .297 percentage (16-5-37), while Anouk van Noord (12 kills, three blocks) and Christine Graf (10 kills, five blocks) all achieved double-digit kills, as well. Middle blockers Laura Walewska (seven kills, five blocks) and Chandler Gorman (seven blocks, five kills, two aces) continued to be double threats on both sides of the net.
CLOSING IT OUT
Abilene Christian got out to a 4-0 run in set five and the Lancers called a timeout to regroup. CBU responded by scoring 11 of the next 14 points to take an 11-7 lead. The Wildcats wouldn't come closer than three points the rest of the way.
California Baptist got six of its 13 blocks in that fifth set, while two kills from Gorman and Dahoue were pivotal in closing out the match, as well.
WAC STANDINGS UPDATE
With a 6-3 conference record, CBU moved into a tie for first place in the WAC West Division at the end of its match. The Lancers are tied for first with NM State and Grand Canyon, as both the Lopes and Aggies end this week at 6-3 in conference.
Utah Valley (5-3) has an opportunity to add to the logjam in the standings with a win in its match against Sam Houston later Saturday. Chicago State (4-3), Dixie State (4-4) and Seattle U (1-8) round out the West Division standings in the WAC.
CBU will return to Riverside for its final two home matches of the regular season against NM State on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. and Grand Canyon on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. Saturday's match versus the Lopes will serve as Senior Day for the Lancers' Oaks, Okuhara, van Noord and Sydney Marks.
