OREM – In need of a win to keep its hopes of a conference championship alive, California Baptist University volleyball battled it out with Utah Valley in the second-to-last match of the regular season for both squads.
Despite CBU's strong attack from the service line and impressive performance from Paige Johnstone, the Wolverines came away with the 3-0 win (25-17, 25-23, 25-21) in the Lockhart Arena on Thursday. The Lancers fall to 13-10 overall and 8-5 in the Western Athletic Conference this year, while UVU improves to 12-12 and 7-6.
Johnstone posted a match-high 20 digs and five assists in the match. CBU also had a 9-5 advantage when it came to aces, with Tesa Oaks and Hana Okuhara each putting down three. Oaks led the Lancers in points, with 10.5 on seven kills, three aces and a block. Christine Graf also had seven kills on .300 hitting percentage (7-1-20).
Anouk van Noord (six) and Laura Walewska (five) each had at least five kills. Leah Pease finished with 13 assists and six digs, while Okuhara had 10 assists and six digs to go with her three aces.
Johnstone has a team-high 343 digs (4.23 a set). She was named the WAC Defender of the Week four weeks ago after she averaged 5.83 digs a set (35 overall). The junior has 17 double-digit dig performances this season and has seven matches with at least 20. Overall, Johnstone's 4.23 digs per set this season rank third and her 343 digs are seventh in CBU's single-season history in the NCAA era.
WAC STANDINGS UPDATE
The loss eliminates CBU from contention for the WAC West Division title this season, as it hands the Lancers their fifth conference loss. Three other West Division teams: NM State (9-4), Grand Canyon and Chicago State (8-4) have just four conference losses.
The Cougars and Lopes are set to face off in Arizona later Wednesday evening, while NM State will host CSU on the final day of the WAC season on Saturday. Those are the final conference matches for Chicago State, Grand Canyon and NMSU, which means at least one team is bound to finish with four losses in the case of a win from the Aggies, Lopes or a 2-0 week for CSU.
The Lancers will wrap up the regular season with a road match at Dixie State on Saturday at 11 a.m. Pacific.
CBU will look to achieve some program bests in its final match of the regular season, as a top-three finish would secure its best-ever performance in the WAC since it joined the conference in 2018. A win Saturday would also match the Lancers' single-season record of nine WAC wins first set in its debut campaign.
